Torfaen MP and Shadow Home Secretary Rt Hon Nick Thomas-Symonds voted against the Government’s hike in National Insurance this week which will place an enormous burden on the youngest and lowest paid workers the hardest and will impact on the businesses that will drive the post-pandemic recovery.

Despite the Prime Minister and the Chancellor both making promises not to raise National Insurance, the Government have gone back on this commitment, raising the tax by 1.25% for both workers and employers from April 2022.

Speaking against the rise, the Torfaen MP said: ‘This rushed through manifesto-breaking hike in National Insurance represents a tax on jobs, and it means 2.5 million families face a Tory double whammy of the £20 cut to Universal Credit and an increase in National Insurance.

After breaking their commitment on overseas aid, and their commitment to the pension triple lock, the rise in National Insurance is a hat-trick of Tory broken promises. You cannot trust a word this Government says.’

Nick Thomas-Symonds is the Member of Parliament for Torfaen, representing the Labour Party in Parliament since 2015.
